Parenting: The Salvation Conversation

Conversation over dinner:

Pablo, 12 (to Lukas, 9): Everybody eventually dies. You will die someday and you will go to God.

Me (curiously, to Pablo): Are you going to heaven?

Pablo: Yes!

Me: How do you know that?

Pablo: Because Jesus is my LORD and Savior.

Me (turning to Lukas): What about you? Are you going to heaven?

Lukas: Yes!

Me: How do you know?

Lukas: Because I believe in Jesus Christ. Because he died for me.

Me (turns to Judah, 7): Are you going to heaven?

Judah: Yes!

Me: Why are you going to heaven?

Judah: You know why? (in that super cute tone of his that stirs my heart) Because I believe that Jesus died on the cross for me.

Me: How did you guys learn this?

Pablo: I learned it from my One-to-One booklet.

Lukas: I read about it in the Bible.

Judah: From you! (smiles)

Sometimes I get overwhelmed and think that I’ve not done enough. That I’m not teaching my kids enough. But conversations like this give me comfort and assurance that they’ll be okay.

For as long as we have taught them about Jesus and who He is in their lives, somehow, I can exhale.

“You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” Deuteronomy 11:19.

“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” Matthew 7:11.
