Homeschooling: Feeding Guinea pigs and Bunnies at Ark Avilon Zoo
Taking the kids to Ark Avilon Zoo yesterday was totally unplanned.
We originally just wanted to stay home and relax the holiday away, but the kids appeared bored so, at around lunch time, after checking out several websites on kiddie venues, we decided to take the kids to see the animals at Ark Avilon.
If you have more than one kid, I’m sure you get how much time it takes to get everyone ready, plus, we had to pass by for baby wipes at 7-11, as I was pretty sure some small hands were going to get dirty at the zoo.
We got to Ark Avilon nearing 5 PM, the place closes at 6 M. There weren’t too many people, it was a long-weekend type of holiday, so a lot of families have chosen to go for out-of-town respites.
We no longer caught the much-talked-about Orangutan, but there were still some nice stuff for the kids to see.
Birds at the entrance
Ark Avilon is an indoor zoo, we didn’t have to worry about the rain as we go around to see the animals. We were greeted by a display of different birds as soon as we entered the zoo’s premises and Judah was thrilled, just as Lukas had been at Kids’ Workshop.
We let the kids feed the fish in the fish pond for a while, but quickly moved along to see what else they had.
There was a variety of leopards and tigers, and some snakes, meerkats that like attention, prairie dogs that buried themselves under the sands in their cages, turtles, donkeys, goats, and penguins.
There were also Bormean pigs, hornbills, fruit doves, a bear cat that Jay thought was just a stuff toy on display, and lizards.
It was somewhat similar to Residence Inn, except that in Ark Avilon, there were no riding on donkeys and there were no pythons slithering on picnic tables like kings.
We also didn’t meet Bonnie, the mommy Croc that recently gave birth, but I think we met one of her babies. The little freshwater croc was in a tiny aquarium by the entrance. We only noticed it and a few other small animals on our way out.
I read somewhere that feeding milk to the lamb is a must-do there, but since we came late, the kids didn’t get a chance to do that.
What they let the kids do was to feed carrots to the bunnies and to the guinea pigs.
I loved watching them extend the sticks, with the carrots at the end, to the animals and listen to them laugh as the animals scrambled towards the food for a nibble.
What we think about Ark Avilon
We like Ark Avilon. It’s nice that there’s a zoo nearby to take the kids to see and observe animals. We haven’t had a car in months and it’s good that a cab ride doesn’t cost us too much.
I also enjoyed reading the fun facts they had on a board by the stairs. I think families that visit Ark Avilon should take a look at that board and learn a few things about these fascinating animals.
Here’s an example of a fun fact they had on that board:
I’m actually rolling out a few more of these on Fully Housewifed Facebook page, so stay tuned!
In terms of fees, we think that the entrance fee of Php 300 per person can be a bit steep for a family of five, considering how small the place is and how few the animals are.
We still have to pay extra to have our picture taken with some of the animals using our own cameras and buy feeds if we were to feed the animals.
The available feeds were fish food, carrots, I saw Okra and some leafy greens, each being sold for Php 40.
That’s okay, though, I’m good with that. The place is clean and the kids really loved feeding the animals.
‘You touch, you pay’ policy
If there was anything that put me off, it’s the sign at the gift shop they have by the entrance. They have a display of toys and souvenirs easily accessed by anyone, with a sign that says, “If you touch me, you buy me”.
I mean, come on, we’re talking kids here, of course they want to touch! I had to rein three excited little kids back to keep them from touching anything while Jay was paying for our tickets, because I didn’t want to pay for things that may not even make it to our house intact. You know how kids are, they break things.
And even if they do make it to our house whole, I’m pretty sure my kids will not play with them or use them and these souvenirs don’t exactly cost just a few pesos.
By the way, I thought the animal shirts were nice, but we weren’t ready to spend that much for shirts. Maybe next time.
A good effort
That’s all I have. There’s really nothing much to tell. It’s a nice place to bring small kids to because it’s interactive. My kids recognised the meerkats even before I read the sign above because of the movie, Ice Age. They were really excited to see one in real life.
I think it’s a pretty good effort for a zoo, though. I posted more pictures on Fully Housewifed Facebook page.
Visit Ark Avilon’s official website if you want to know more about the zoo. Who knows, you might like it enough to have your child’s next party at the venue. They do hold parties, you know.

Looks like you guys had fun despite not seeing everything. The sign would put me off too, does it mean you can’t even inspect the stuff before buying it?
May De Jesus-Palacpac
I guess if you really intend to buy, you can inspect. Kasi the two adults with a little girl naman touched the bug garden decors before they bought a couple.
I’m not sure if that sign was only for the animal coin banks in the middle ’cause that’s where the sign is.
We had fun naman, tricky lang that part.

Have always wanted to bring the kids there since it’s within the city. Pretty steep lang the entrance fee. Oh my, what’s with that sign? Whoever thought of that does not have kids haha.
May De Jesus-Palacpac
Haha yeah! Definitely without kids.

I’ve always wanted to go there but the pretty steep entrance fee is what’s stopping me. That sign would stress me out too! Ziggy likes to touch everything!

I’ve visited ark avilon and though it’s smaller than other zoo, it can really give kids a more interactive experience.

Where planning to go to Manila Zoo this Sunday but I think we should check out Ark Avilon first. I think the kids at home will enjoy the interactive experience.

Nice pics.. The zoo looks clean and children can feed the animals 🙂 will check it out soon.

Great! Tag me if you’ll post about it. 🙂

Scary naman yang policy na yan! I wouldn’t get within 5 meters sa toys if
I have a kid with me haha. I wanna go to Ark Avilon Zoo!

Wow that “If you touch me, you buy me” policy if a little off ha. I mean, even in big theme parks, children are allowed to touch and play with the toys with no commitment to buying it. We have been to Avilon in Montalban (that I have to blog pa) but not yet here in Ark Avilon.

Nde ba nila pwede ilagay sa glass case yung displays nila so there will be some sort of barrier from kids? they can hold on the the glass all they want and they wouldn’t be able to touch the displays… 😀
on a side note, i haven’t been to a zoo for a long, long time…

I personally find the sign at the souvenir shop funny, its witty and humorous. But of course, all of us are different. The Ark Avilon is such a nice place for kids to learn and have fun at the same time.

I heard that there are plenty of nice zoos in Australia.:)

havent been to this zoo but it looks interesting. I would love to bring my baby cousins here too.
May De Jesus-Palacpac
Hello Shine! They will love the interaction. 🙂

I want to bring Little Kulit here ang layo lang as per my mom mag wait na lang me field trip. The only zoo that he saw is the one in Tagaytay and Zoobic Safari. I agree with the policy in their souvenir shop having a toddler you cannot control them naman agad to touch things.
May De Jesus-Palacpac
Ooooh, how was Zoobic Safari? We want to go there, too!

Looking forward to bring my little man here 🙂 we have a pet guinea pig at home 🙂

Awww…my hubby wanted to get the kids Guinea pigs, too, but stray cats keep coming to our house, so I thought it wouldn’t be a good idea.

Naloka ako dun sa sign. Eh ang baba pa naman ng EQ ko at malamang if the sign is not that big, malamang hindi ko makita yun. Baka mag uwi ako ng sandamakmak na anik anik kung sakali pala. Hahahaha!
May De Jesus-Palacpac
Haha, it’s in the middle. It’s easy to miss if maraming tao. 🙂

Oh! Thanks for the heads up! I’ll make sure we won’t go to the gift shop if ever we visit Ark Avilon Zoo. We might end up buying all the stuff there, heehee! For the simple reason that my daughter loves to touch anything that suits her interest. That’d be pretty “scary” if ever we’re inside that gift shop. 🙂 Thank you for sharing!
May De Jesus-Palacpac
You can’t avoid it mommy Joy, hehe, it’s right by the entrance across the counter where you pay for your tickets. 🙂

Things must have changed a lot from when we went there when my daughter was only two. I heard and read a lot of complaints from other moms, too about paying so much for their every move. Anyway, I’m glad you had fun!
May De Jesus-Palacpac
It may have made a difference that we came late and there were no people around. At first, the guy at the birds was telling us that we need to pay for every pic we take with our camera but the girl at the counter said it’s okay.
Nicole Cuerdo
I find the price a bit too steep too, considering that they ask you to pay for a lot more stuff inside in order to make the most of the visit. Sana they don’t charge for taking pictures with the animals. And the touch-buy policy would put me off as well, sana they only applied it to the breakable stuff. It’s nice though that your kids had fun!
May De Jesus-Palacpac
Yeah, despite the gift shop policy, the animals were still a joy for the kids. We might even bring them back there so they can see the bunnies again. 🙂

My son celebrated his birthday last Oct 4 so we decided to take him to Ark Avilon because he loves animals and we don’t have to travel far. We also got there at 5PM na. Di na kami tumuloy because we had to pay php400 for each adult, eh apat kami, plus php300 for the kid. That sign that says if you touch me you buy me also turned me off. Hello?? I’m not giving you my money if I can’t even inspect your product before buying. I don’t think we will ever go there again. We ended up going to Fun Ranch instead. Mas mura and my son enjoyed it!
May De Jesus-Palacpac
Have you tried deal sites? I think despite the setbacks, young kids would still be delighted seeing the Meerkats and some of the other animals there. 🙂
LorraineTee
No, haven’t tried deal sites, actually. Thanks for bringing that up. 🙂

Naku! Baka mabutas bulsa ko with their policy! My daughter loves to touch pa naman lalo na mga stuffed toys, she would hug them ng feel na feel! their policy is really bad for business!
May De Jesus-Palacpac
In my honest opinion, it was really in bad taste because the gift shop had a lot of attractive stuff in it, the kids will really be drawn to it. But the animals are still nice to see. They had some that you won’t see in most zoos, like the bear cat and meerkats and the penguins. 🙂
Charlotte Anne
Whoa! That is a lot of fun! 300 per person? It’s a bit pricey. Wala bang discount for kids? Sana meron.
